Having stayed in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora myself, I can confidently say the experience is unforgettable. Pros of Staying in an Overwater Bungalow

✅ Direct Water Access – One of my favorite things about my stay in Bora Bora was being able to step right into the lagoon for a morning swim. The convenience of having the ocean as your backyard is unbeatable.
✅ Luxury & Unique Experience – Overwater bungalows often come with premium amenities like glass floor panels (where I loved watching the marine life below!), private plunge pools, and butler service.
✅ A True Escape – Being surrounded by water creates a feeling of total relaxation and detachment from the outside world. It’s a setting that forces you to slow down and soak in the moment.
Cons of Staying in an Overwater Bungalow
⚠️ Price Tag – Overwater bungalows are a premium experience, often costing significantly more than beachfront or garden villas. My stay in Bora Bora was worth every penny, but it’s definitely an investment!
⚠️ Limited Accessibility – Many resorts require a boat or seaplane transfer to reach the property, which can add to travel time and cost. In Bora Bora, I had to take a boat from the airport to my resort, which was beautiful but something to plan for.
⚠️ Less Sand, More Water – If you love lounging on the beach, keep in mind that overwater bungalows prioritize water access over direct beach access. During my stay, I spent more time in the water than on the sand!
⚠️ Weather Considerations – Being fully exposed to the elements means that wind and rain can sometimes affect your experience. Luckily, I had perfect weather, but I can imagine how different it would feel during a storm.
Where to Stay: Best Overwater Bungalow Destinations
🌴 French Polynesia – The birthplace of overwater bungalows! My experience in Bora Bora was unforgettable, and I highly recommend Four Seasons Bora Bora, St. Regis Bora Bora, or Conrad Bora Bora Nui for the ultimate luxury stay.
🏝 Maldives – Home to some of the most extravagant overwater villas in the world. Consider Soneva Jani, Gili Lankanfushi, or Six Senses Laamu for the perfect blend of luxury and sustainability.
