Some hotels are simply a place to stay. Others become part of the story of a destination. Our recent weekend at The Epicurean Hotel, an Autograph Collection property, was firmly the latter — a stay that perfectly blended elevated hospitality, a true sense of neighborhood, and a deep appreciation for food, wine, and culture.
Located in Tampa’s Hyde Park / SoHo district, The Epicurean is ideal for travelers who want to experience the city beyond the typical tourist lens. This neighborhood is lively, walkable, and full of local personality — think smoothie and juice bars, cozy coffee shops, wine bars, boutiques, and restaurants that locals actually frequent. It’s the kind of area where you can leave the car parked and truly explore on foot.
As part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, the hotel delivers the elevated service and thoughtful design you expect, while still feeling distinctive and personal — not cookie-cutter. Everything here is unapologetically themed around food and adult beverages, and it’s done in a way that feels curated rather than gimmicky.
One of our favorite moments was attending one of the Epicurean’s onsite culinary series, where chefs invite guests to taste and give feedback on dishes before they officially debut on the menu. It was interactive, intimate, and such a fun way to feel connected to the creative process behind the scenes.

Another standout is the onsite wine store, which is absolutely worth browsing — even if you’re not staying at the hotel. The selection is impressive and thoughtfully curated, making it easy to bring a little piece of the Epicurean experience home with you.
And of course, no stay in this area would be complete without mentioning Bern’s Steak House, located just down the street. A Tampa institution, yes — but the real must-do is the legendary Dessert Room. After dinner, you’re escorted upstairs to a series of intimate dessert rooms where you can linger over decadent sweets, specialty coffees, and after-dinner drinks. It’s iconic for a reason.
Visiting in February also means you may catch Gasparilla, Tampa’s signature pirate-themed festival that brings an energetic, celebratory buzz to the city. Pair that with Tampa’s mild winter weather and it’s an ideal time for a long weekend escape.
The Epicurean strikes a rare balance: elevated yet approachable, indulgent but relaxed. Between the comfortable rooms, intuitive service, and its unbeatable location, it’s a hotel that feels intentionally designed for travelers who truly appreciate good food, good wine, and a strong sense of place.
This is a property I especially love recommending to:
