There are places you visit because you’ve heard they’re beautiful. Then there are places that completely exceed every expectation.
San Sebastián (Donostia) is one of those places.
Nestled along Spain’s northern Basque coast, this elegant seaside city effortlessly blends world-renowned cuisine, spectacular beaches, Belle Époque architecture, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle that makes you want to stay just a little longer.
After spending several days exploring San Sebastián with my family, I completely understand why it’s considered one of Europe’s premier culinary destinations—and why it deserves a place on nearly every Spain itinerary.

Why Visit San Sebastián?
San Sebastián is famous for many things:

Unlike Barcelona or Madrid, San Sebastián feels slower, cleaner, and wonderfully relaxed.
It’s the kind of city where locals spend evenings strolling along the waterfront, children play in parks until sunset, and meals become experiences rather than simply something to eat.
La Concha Beach: The Heart of the City
If there’s one place that defines San Sebastián, it’s La Concha Beach.
Frequently ranked among Europe’s most beautiful urban beaches, its wide crescent-shaped bay is framed by elegant historic buildings and lush green hills.
What makes La Concha special isn’t just the beach itself—it’s everything surrounding it.
You’ll find:

✔️ Easy pedestrian access to the Old Town (Parte Vieja)

Rent a Bike—You’ll See So Much More
One of my favorite discoveries was just how bike-friendly San Sebastián is.
Dedicated bike lanes run throughout much of the city, making cycling one of the easiest ways to explore.
Rental bikes are available near the Tourist Information Office at the entrance to the Old Town, and the city’s mostly flat terrain makes riding enjoyable for nearly everyone.
It’s an excellent way to connect La Concha, Zurriola Beach, the marina, shopping districts, and many of the city’s parks in just a few hours.
The Aquarium: Worth the Visit?
Absolutely.
Located along the harbor, the San Sebastián Aquarium is an easy stop for families, couples, or anyone interested in the city’s deep connection to the sea.
Plan on about 90 minutes for your visit.
While the aquarium itself isn’t enormous, it offers a thoughtful mix of:
- Marine life
- Maritime history
- Historic fishing exhibits
- Beautiful shell collections
- An underwater viewing tunnel
Because fishing has shaped San Sebastián for centuries, the historical exhibits add valuable context beyond simply seeing fish.
Pintxos: Don’t Leave Without Trying Them
You simply cannot visit San Sebastián without experiencing its famous pintxos.
Often compared to tapas—but very much their own Basque tradition—pintxos are small, beautifully crafted bites served atop slices of bread or plated individually.
A few iconic pintxos to try include:
- Gilda — anchovy, olive, and pickled pepper
- Sea Urchin
- Anchovies with blueberry sauce
- Cochinillo (suckling pig)
- Basque-style seafood creations
- Burnt Basque Cheesecake (a local favorite that’s now famous worldwide)
One important tip:
Restaurants in San Sebastián follow more traditional dining hours than many other parts of Spain.
Lunch service typically winds down in the afternoon before kitchens close for several hours, and dinner starts later in the evening—but weekdays tend to end earlier than cities like Madrid or Seville.
If there’s a famous pintxos bar on your list, arrive early or be prepared to wait.
The best ones often have lines.
Explore Beyond the Old Town
Although Parte Vieja gets most of the attention, don’t stop there.
We enjoyed wandering through:
- The local fish market
- Shopping streets near our hotel
- Beautiful riverside promenades
- Elegant plazas
- The marina
The city is incredibly walkable, and every neighborhood seems to reveal another café, boutique, or scenic view.
El Peine del Viento (The Comb of the Wind)
One of San Sebastián’s most iconic landmarks is El Peine del Viento, the famous steel sculptures created by Eduardo Chillida.
Perched dramatically where the Atlantic Ocean crashes into the rocks, it’s one of the city’s best viewpoints and especially beautiful around sunset.
Even if you’re not interested in sculpture, the views alone make the visit worthwhile.
Looking for Adventure?
If relaxing on La Concha isn’t enough, head over to Zurriola Beach, San Sebastián’s surfing hotspot.
You’ll find plenty of surf schools and rental shops offering boards and wetsuits for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
It’s a completely different atmosphere from La Concha and gives visitors another side of the city to experience.
My Final Thoughts
San Sebastián quickly became one of my favorite cities in Spain.
It offers a wonderful balance of incredible food, beautiful scenery, outdoor activities, and a relaxed pace that makes it easy to enjoy with or without children. Whether you’re spending two days or a full week, it’s a destination that rewards slowing down. It’s not about rushing between attractions. It’s about wandering beautiful streets, enjoying unforgettable meals, watching surfers catch waves, and soaking in one of Spain’s most elegant coastal cities.
